Get the London Hotel Chic Look with Stolz

Bring a sense of elegance and charm to your home with the help of Stolz Furnishers. With the Australian made fabric lounge suites Clever and Royal, coupled with designer accent chairs, ottomans and tables, it’s possible to achieve a high-end London hotel look similar to leading interior designer Kip Kemp MBE.

Design Director of Firmdale Hotels UK, Kip has inspired a worldwide interior style that brings layering of modern colours, designer patterns and textures to the traditional, previously subdued London interior style. Taking a similar lead to Kip’s design sensibility is the Homemakers Cleaver lounge (shown above) featured in the striking Warwick Lovely Oxblood fabric – a modern take on a vintage classic.

This three-seater sofa features deep, plush comfortable seating and is made right here in Australia, allowing you to choose a fabric colour and pattern that suits your style. Add to this a splash of vintage pastel velvet cushions and the Cleaver Accent Chair (pictured in Warwick Omar Jungle fabric), and your designer look starts to take shape.

As pictured, elegant wall panelling, light drenching French doors, hardwood floors and a quality wool rug by Weave (also available at Stolz) provides a fantastic foundation to the room.

Other choices might include the Emperor Supper Table – a small, yet detailed side table featuring a naturally grained, rich brown marble top that completes its contemporary brushed bronze base. It’s perfect as a side table decorated with a book and a vase, or as a convenient space to temporarily stowaway your midnight snack, shhh! The Emperor Coffee Table is a great way of expanding on functional beauty. Its base plays with angular movement in a creative way, softly distorting orientation; this makes it a unique accompaniment to the lounge suit.

Also shown is the 800mm Homemakers ottoman in Warwick Lovely Oxblood fabric – the perfect place to rest your magazine and morning coffee.

The classic style of the Royal lounge suite compliments any living room without screaming for attention. While this lounge suite leans toward the traditional London style, it can be dressed up with tropical-inspired fabric cushions from Madras Link (also available at Stolz Furnishers). The Royal is also proudly made in Australia and is available in a variety of fabrics. With scrolled arms, it’s available as a three-seater or two-seater or armchair. The ottoman is sold separately.

While one might choose to limit the colour and texture, layering (as pictured), it’s easy to modernise this lounge suite to achieve the ‘Kit Kemp look’ by carefully selecting patterned fabrics and pastel-toned floral arrangements to dress up your room. Floral print artwork also works well in such a setting, as does designer brass, glass or chrome vases. Scented candles and/or aroma diffusers in warming room fragrances (available from Stolz Fine Things) are also a fine way to complete the experience – allowing your family and friends to relax in true London chic designer style.

IMG Nordic 91 Recliner – Centrepiece to a New Benalla Sunroom

When Benalla chef Sue Ellis extended her 1930s Californian Bungalow with a new sunroom, she turned to Stolz Furnishers to complete the look with a new IMG recliner that she made the centrepiece.

Sue explains, ‘The ideas was to capture the Northern sun and garden aspect at the rear of the house by adding a large sun-filled living space featuring floor to ceiling windows. The room connects to the outdoor pergola that’s draped in passionfruit and kiwi fruit vines. We also have a veggie garden and large collection of fruit trees – with the sunroom views we’re effectively bringing the outdoors in.’

While the external focus is glorious, internally Australian hardwood floors and minimalist furniture choices, including Scandinavian-inspired, whitewashed Hudson bar stools from Stolz, continue the theme of natural organics. The stools feature appealing slender legs and a pleasing wool fabric appearance. Their design is clean-lined, slim and highly desirable.

Central to the living space is a new IMG Nordic 91 recliner and footstool, featuring elegant, blond timber. ‘The design is fantastic and functional, says Sue. ‘I love the way it extends and retracts, and its swivel design allows you to easily change viewing positions from garden to kitchen in an instant. I appreciate its clean lines and minimalist footprint – meaning it doesn’t dominate the living space. It also manages to compliment the room’s airiness, creating the illusion of more space as the flooring beams can clearly be seen beneath it.

In terms of lifestyle transformation, the sunroom is the new heart of the home, ‘it’s a great everyday space’, says Sue. This cleverly designed, open plan living space now provides a modern living approach, while the meticulously restored original rooms are used primarily for formal occasions.

Sue explains that she appreciates Stolz Furnishers for their ‘fabulous range, covering every area of the home.’ This allows her to enjoy extensive browsing and trying out products quickly – ‘there’s something for every room in the house, and staff are very knowledgeable. Words that we’re particularly pleased to hear.

The team at Stolz Furnishers wish Sue and her family many years of continued happiness and relaxation in their newly renovated home.

Mid-century Modern appeal at Stolz

The American design movement Mid-century modern is an interior design, graphic design, architecture and urban development style that was popular from 1945 to 1969.

Its design aesthetic was aligned with the Modernism movement of the period that included cubist artworks such as Picasso’s Weeping Woman and standout architecture including Frank Lloyd Wright’s spiral designed Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

The style is typically characterised by clean, simple lines and practical use of materials. The inclusion of decorative embellishments in furniture was limited, with more a focus on a foundation in bold design shape combined with a totalitarian attitude towards the object’s function and usability.

Throughout the 2000s a revival in Mid-century Modern design has grown in popularity due in part to popular television series such as Madmen and Masters of Sex; however, its design appeal combined with clever functionality is also a firm reason for its revival.

Stolz Furnishers now stock a comprehensive range of Mid-century Modern products including the Brandy sofa (pictured above) featuring luxurious semi-aniline leather. Its texture is soft, it is hard-wearing and is visually stunning. Keeping in check with the modernist approach, Brandy features a sleek low back design, a timber plinth feature on its base, slim-lined metal legs, plus two leather colour options: Brandi (pictured) and Carbon Grey. Special orders from a wider range of different leathers and colours are also possible.

If there’s one signature within the home that speaks volumes for the Mid-century Modern movement it would have to be sleek and contemporary coffee and occasional tables.

A case in point is the cleverly styled Torrance Range, including a large contemporary coffee table with smoked grey glass top and crisscross black metal frame. The smaller Torrance side table follows the same design sensibility and appeals with its fine metal base.

The Roma Range of occasional tables includes a lamp table, coffee table, hall table and buffet. Each features a herringbone timber pattern that’s both beautiful yet simple enough in its approach. The herringbone is fantastically matched to classic Mid-century Modern brushed bronze metal legs and bases, with shapes influence by pre-modernist German Bauhaus architecture. The combination of detailed stained timber and brushed bronze proves a collection of notable style.

One of the more intriguing pieces available from Stolz is the Nordic hall table (below, left). While simple in design appearance and materials – MDF with Ash veneer top – there’s a visual game at play that’s standout Mid-century Modern cool. Take a closer look at the timber legs that rise and taper into shoulders that tuck underneath the tabletop. This presents the illusion of a floating platform tabletop, not unlike a museum display stand. It delivers simplicity and elegance without overstating its presence.

Other furniture choices that follow the Mid-century Modern style include the Emperor supper, coffee and console tables, also featuring brushed bronze bases and legs. These are perhaps a little richer in appearance as they include sophisticated brown marble tops in both square and circular designs. While leaning toward a more regal look, they’re a perfect accompaniment to both modern and traditional home environments.

What Is Aniline Leather?

Aniline leather is a high-quality product. Aniline actually refers to the dyes that are used in making the final product, once the hide is tanned. It is a special treatment process used on the fine Napa hides. This process makes it stand out among the many kinds of leather.

Aniline leather is vegetable dyed, along with a light coating, with minimal extra care required.

Sustainable Australian Timber Dining Settings

One of the joys of visiting Stolz Furnishers is to inspect its divine collection of dining settings featuring premium Australian timbers, including a range produced using sustainably sourced hardwoods. While the many variances in timber selection can be a complex subject, we ‘cut across the grain’ to inspect the advantages in some of these naturally exquisite timbers.

Messmate

Messmate timber highly desirable in the commercial manufacturer of dining settings. Messmate is a hardwood native to Tasmania and Victoria and the tablelands of New South Wales and southern Queensland. A species that is rich and warm in detail with a moderately coarse texture. The sometimes interlocking, straight grains feature beautifully defined rings. The beauty of Australian Messmate Hardwood Timber is that no two pieces are ever the same. The gum veins and natural characteristics are seen in messmate timber are not found in any other hardwood timbers, making this product incredibly appealing.

Popular Messmate Dining Tables

The Resin River 2700 dining table is one of Stolz’s most popular sellers. Made from Victorian Messmate and featuring a natural timber edge with inlaid resin ‘river accent’ design, its top is contrasted with modern, square edge black metal legs.

Marri

Marri timber is renowned for its distinctive gum veins and characteristics, making it one of the world’s unique and perfect timber for creating fine, handmade furniture.

Marri’s yellow to pale brown heartwood and paler to white sapwood contrast beautifully with the dark red gum on the tree’s trunk. It has a coarse but even texture with slightly interlocked grain. The finished timber is honey-coloured with a distinctive vein structure.

Such characteristics are born from withstanding extreme weather conditions such as bushfires, severe storm and prolonged periods of drought.

The Marri timber used in dining table furniture at Stolz is ethically sourced from Australia’s largest and most reputable timber suppliers. Such suppliers are proactive in working closely with government bodies to ensure longevity and sustainability.

The Luca dining setting in Marri timber is pictured with the Malmo dining chair and comes in two table size options: 2400mm and 2100mm.

Tasmanian Oak

Tasmanian Oak is light in colour, varying from straw to reddish brown with intermediate shades of cream to pink. It is recognised for its excellent staining qualities, which allow ready matching with other timbers, finishes or furnishings and its ability for glue laminating to cover long spans.

The Urban 9-piece laminated Tasmanian Oak dining suite is a popular choice for buyers looking for specific timber detail and warmth.

About Acacia (timber)

The acacia tree, a hardwood species native to Australia, is well known for its fast growth and hard density. The species grows to thirty metres tall in as little as 12 years. This rapid growth rate produces tall, straight trunks ideal for furniture production.

Acacia’s density makes it both highly durable and water-resistant. These are ideal qualities for heavily-used furniture and cabinets that frequently come into contact with water. Acacia is also naturally antibacterial, which makes it safe enough to use for preparing or serving food.

The Homestead range is lightly brushed, whitewashed and clear coated for further durability.

Knife Sharpening with Mino Tsuchida of Global Knives, Japan

Global knives exit the factory in Japan with a very sharp edge. The strength of Cromova 18, Global’s unique blade material, ensures that the sharpness of their products will be maintained longer than most other knives.

However, Global knives do need to be sharpened from time to time to maintain their keen edge. As a general rule, the best sharpening tool for an individual is one that he or she is going to use. Each sharpening tool is different and might be easier or more difficult to use depending on the individual and their level of experience or skill.

Global recommends periodically sharpening your knives using either a waterstone or ceramic stone. In between stone sharpenings, it is recommended that you use the Global fine ceramic or diamond rod to keep the edges of your knives aligned. Global serrated knives do not need to be sharpened.
